Blue Flag Beaches In India

India currently has 8 Blue Flag beaches; Shivrajpur (Dwarka, Gujrat), Ghoghla (Diu), Kasarkod, and Padubidri (Karnataka), Kappad (Kerala), Rushikonda (Andhra Pradesh), Golden Beach (Puri, Odisha), and Radhanagar (Andaman and Nicobar Islands). Each of these states is very proud to be a part of the prestigious Blue Flag beach certification.

India on 5th June 2018, World Environment Day launched a beach cleaning campaign – I AM SAVING MY BEACH to support sustainable development in 13 coastal states.

Blue Flag is a certification that is given to beaches, marinas, or boating operators. It is awarded by a Denmark-based non-profit Foundation for Environmental Education. This organization awards an eco-label to these beaches after 33 strict checks based on environmental, education, safety, and access-related criteria. 

Spain, Turkey, and Greece have the most Blue Flag beaches with over 400+ Blue Flag beaches and many Blue Flag Marinas and Boats.

Shivrajpur (Dwarka, Gujrat)

Dwarka is an excellent holiday destination with sightseeing, pilgrimage, and many beach activities with exotic wildlife. It was awarded the Blue Flag certification in October 2020 and was described as a white sand beach with azure clear water. The beach runs on solar power and is disabled-friendly. The water is shallow and perfect for a swim. It also has a marvelous lighthouse named Kacchigadh Lighthouse. This beach has eminent facilities such as clean toilets, drinking water, changing rooms, fitness center, recliners, etc. There are many activities like Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Boating, etc.

Ghogla (Diu)

Diu is one of the three districts of the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu of India. Ghogla beach is the largest beach in Diu. This Blue Flag beach, the northern part of Diu, was described as a long stretch of sand with gentle waves. This beach is one of the cleanest and least crowded beaches. However, it’s an opportunity missed for them to discover a splendid new place cut away from the cacophony of the town. It is very safe and clean and one can indulge in water sports like parasailing, surfing, and banana boats.

Kasarod (Karnataka)

Kasarkod is a village in southern Karnataka, located in the Honavar taluk of Uttara Kannada district. This beach is described as an eco-friendly beach that stretches up to 5 kilometers. Kasarbod beach is surrounded by beautiful casuarinas and is covered in pure white sand. Like the other beach in the list of India’s Blue flag beaches, this beach has clean, safe, and efficient facilities to provide. It has a solid waste treatment plant, water treatment plant, watchtower, gymnasium, disabled-friendly equipment, and many more. This beach also has great restaurants, deluxe swiss cottages, and the Sharavati River and Estuary.

Padubidri (Karnataka)

This beach is part of the state of Karnataka, it is on the way from Udupi to Mangalore. It was certified as a Blue Flag beach in December 2020. This beach is a simple classic beach that provides peace and warmth. The beach is well kept and clean with clean changing rooms, solar panels, waste treatment plants, CCTV cameras, etc. This beach is children-friendly and safe. Many events like volleyball competitions, speed boats, and water scooter rides. Many fairs, tournaments, and musical programs are also held on this beach.

Kappad (Kerala)

Kappad beach is located near Koyilandy in the district of Kozhikode, Kerala. It is believed that Vasco Da Gama stepped onto this beach 500 years ago with 170 men. Kappad beach is known for international best practices for controlling pollution in coastal areas. In July 2020, it was officially declared as a Blue Flag beach. The major attraction is the 800-year-old temple located near the beach. This beach is uncrowded and very peaceful. The golden sand and fishing hamlets in the vicinage also add to its peacefulness. It is highly recommended to grab a packet of fresh banana chips and walk on the beach.

Rushikonda (Andhra Pradesh)

Rushikonda is a neighborhood situated on Visakhapatnam and Bheemili road.  This beach is widely known for its golden sands and tidy waves of the Bay of Bengal. Rushikonda beach is the perfect place to enjoy water sports like swimming, water skiing, and windsurfing with its vast stretch of water. Known as one of the virgin beaches of South India, Rushikonda beach is no doubt one of the best beaches of Vizag. During the evening time, this beach is surrounded by nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts enjoying some beautiful moments amidst the scenic view of the beach with a cool breeze caressing them.

Golden Beach (Puri, Odisha)

Golden Beach is located in Odisha used to be a privately owned beach which was certified as a Blue Flag beach in June 2020. It is on the shore of the Bay of Bengal and it is also a sacred Hindu place of worship. The Shri Jagannath Puri Temple is an important Hindu temple. It is very famous for its annual Ratha Yatra or chariot festival. This temple is clean and has a very peaceful environment surrounded by positivity.

Radhanagar (Andaman and Nicobar Islands)

It is one of the most famous attractions of Havelock Island. This beach was given the title of the best beach in Asia, it was a very proud moment for India. Andaman and Nicobar Islands are described to be serene, mesmerizing, and calming. This beach is hugged by coconut trees and tropical jungles. There are a lot of huts, benches, and chairs scattered around the beach, along with tall trees that give a place to relax, take in the beauty and unwind with some snacks and drinks. Situated on the island, it is perfect to trek to the beach and take a dip and relax. The beach has excellent resorts with good facilities to make you feel at home. This is also close to The Elephant Beach and Neil’s Cove, a beautiful and scenic lagoon.

India is home to hundreds of beaches that are beautiful and add to the rich and diverse culture of our country. The above 8 Blue Flag beaches are considered to be beautiful and environmentally friendly. Some of the above beaches may not be as well known as the beaches in Goa, but these will make you feel at peace.
